Cognitive Disability Services
Cognitive disability is a term used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as communicating, taking care of him or herself, and social skills. These limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than a typical child. Children and adults with cognitive disabilities need extra support and often benefit from mental health therapy.
treatment methods
Treatment methods are tailored to the individual and his or her needs. The client’s level of functioning is carefully considered when making a treatment plan. Often support staff, family members and other care givers are consulted to define realistic expectations for treatment.
helping the person you love
Often people with cognitive disabilities have trouble advocating for themselves. They may not realize there is extra support to help them with their mental health needs. It is important for family, friends, support staff, employers and educators to advocate for people with cognitive disabilities and make referrals when appropriate.
reasons for treatment
People with cognitive disabilities seek treatment for a variety of reasons, much like persons of average or superior cognitive intelligence. People with disabilities may need help with anger, depression, anxiety, social skills, employment difficulties, physical limitations and many other reasons.
